Intelligent Basemaps and Thematic Overlays
With the release of ArcGIS 9.2 ESRI will provide a new set of basemap products that are available in both 2D and 3D globe formats. Each of these basemaps integrates several thematic overlays of information and is designed to work directly with ArcGIS.
The basemaps are cartographically rendered to support multiple scale display and are perfect for use as background layers for locally created and maintained datasets.
Intelligent Basemaps
Imagery
Satellite imagery for the world at multiple resolutions, down to 15 meter worldwide, and 1 meter within the United States
Cartographically ready, continuous (fully mosaicked) and color balanced image
Aggregated from a combination of data sources
This imagery globe data is well suited to be used as a natural view of the earth or as a base map for overlaying other data layers, such as natural parks, which are affected by nature.
Shaded Relief
Worldwide shaded relief map at approximately 1-kilometer and 90-meter resolution for the world and 30-meter resolution for the United States.
This globe data is well suited as a basemap for other data layers, such as eco regions or watersheds, which are influenced by the world’s topography.
Physical World
Natural Earth physical map at 1.24 kilometer resolution for the world and 500 meter for the coterminous United States
Topographic maps at 1:1,000,000 scale for the world, down to 1:24,000 scale for the United States
This globe data is well suited as an illustration of earth’s landforms and topography as well as a basemap for other data layers, such as earthquake faults or volcanoes that are related to them.
